Frogs comprise many species. They come into being in murky, slow-moving waters, in putrid places, and after heavy rains. They are boneless creatures; some of them croak while others do not, and they are said to possess keen hearing.
Lessons derived from the hadith:
- The narration conveys a prohibition against killing the frog, and a prohibition means that killing it is unlawful.
- The unlawfulness of killing it implies the unlawfulness of eating it, for if its consumption were permissible, its killing would not have been forbidden. Both the ban on eating it and the ban on killing it are matters of scholarly consensus. Al-Bayhaqi said of the hadith in question: “It is the strongest report that has reached us concerning the prohibition of killing the frog.”
- A physician asked the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—about using the frog in a remedy, and he forbade killing it.
Al-Damiri remarked: “Frog meat nauseates the stomach, causes bloody diarrhea, changes the color of the body, and perturbs the mind. May Allah’s blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad.”
