Vocabulary of the ḥadith
• al-ḍabʿ (hyena): the dotted ḍād is doubled, while the bāʾ is either quiescent or pronounced with ḍammah. It belongs to the family Hyaenidae, order Carnivora, and is distinguished by a large head and powerful jaws.
Al-Damīrī said: “The male is called ḍabʿān; its plural is ḍibāʿīn, and other plurals include aḍbuʿ and ḍubāʿ. It lives off the remains of prey.”
Grammatically the word ḍabʿ is feminine, though it may also be used for the male. One does not say ḍabʿah. Its plurals are aḍbuʿ and ḍubāʿ.
