Imam Aḥmad (5690) and Ibn Mājah (3218) report, through the narration of Ibn ʿUmar, that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Two varieties of carrion and two kinds of blood have been made lawful for us: the carrion are locusts and fish, and the bloods are the liver and the spleen.”
3 – Ibn Kathīr comments: “Locusts are widely known and commonly eaten. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about them he replied, ‘I do not eat them, yet I do not declare them unlawful.’” [Abū Dāwūd 3813] His abstention was purely a matter of personal taste, just as his noble nature felt no desire for the meat of the desert lizard, even though he allowed others to partake of it.
ʿUmar, on the other hand, was fond of locusts and would say, “If only we had a basket or two of them to eat.”
