1144 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said: “The Prophet ﷺ held a race with the horses that had been conditioned (dummirat) from al-Ḥafyāʾ, and their finishing point was Thaniyat al-Wadāʿ. He also raced the unconditioned horses from the Thaniyah to the mosque of Banū Zurayq, and Ibn ʿUmar was among the competitors.” Agreed upon.
Al-Bukhārī adds: Sufyān said, “From al-Ḥafyāʾ to Thaniyat al-Wadāʿ is five or six miles, and from the Thaniyah to the mosque of Banū Zurayq is one mile.”⦗1⦘
Glossary of the ḥadith
• dummirat (passive form, with a ḍammah on the first radical, a doubled mīm, and an open rāʾ): Linguists explain that taḍmīr (conditioning) means to give the horse abundant fodder and water for forty days until it fattens, then reduce its feed and exercise it on the track until its flesh dries, its body becomes lean, and it is ready for racing.
• al-Ḥafyāʾ: pronounced with an open ḥāʾ, a silent fāʾ, followed by a long yāʾ (which may be shortened). Al-Samhudī states that al-Ḥafyāʾ lies at the edge of the Ghābah, northeast of the spring.
The editor notes: “The Ghābah is the racing ground north of Madinah, beyond Mount Uḥud.”
• amaduhā (its end point): with an open hamzah and mīm, followed by a plain dāl; meaning its utmost limit or finish line.
