1139 – Muʿādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Prophet ﷺ sent me to Yemen and ordered me to collect from every adult one dinar, or its equivalent in Muʿāfir cloth.” It was recorded by the three compilers, and Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Ḥākim graded it authentic (1).

Degree of the ḥadīth
This ḥadīth is ṣaḥīḥ. It was narrated by the three, authenticated by Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Ḥākim, and al-Dhahabī concurred with them.
Al-Tirmidhī said, “It is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.” This is the narration of al-Aʿmash from Abū Wāʾil from Masrūq; it is well-preserved, and a number of scholars transmitted it from al-Aʿmash, among them Sufyān al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah, Mubashshir, Ḥarb, Abū ʿAwānah, Yaḥyā ibn Shuʿbah, and Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth.
As for the version rejected by Imām Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, and Ibn Ḥazm, it is the report of Abū Muʿāwiyah from al-Aʿmash from Ibrāhīm from Masrūq from Muʿādh. That chain is not preserved, unlike the former. Allah knows best.
The ḥadīth has numerous additional chains of transmission.
