It lies within the al-Jawf province and is its capital. Among its most important archaeological sites is the fortress of Mārid. Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAṭāʾ al-Shāʿiʿ has authored a two-volume work detailing its antiquities, population, architecture, and modern development—a comprehensive study of that northern region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
