1138 – ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar narrates from Anas, and ʿUthmān ibn Abī Sulaymān likewise transmits: “The Prophet ﷺ sent Khālid ibn al-Walīd to Ukaydir of Dūmat al-Jandal. They captured him and brought him back, whereupon the Prophet spared his life and made peace with him on the basis of the jizya.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd.⦗1⦘

The report is acceptable as evidence; both Abū Dāwūd and al-Mundhirī record it without comment. Al-Ḥāfiẓ says in al-Talkhīṣ: Abū Dāwūd transmitted it through Anas ibn Mālik, and Abū Dāwūd and al-Bayhaqī also related it through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said, “Yazīd ibn Rumān and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr told me that the Prophet ﷺ …,” then he quoted the longer version. Al-Bayhaqī considered the chain strong.
Glossary of the ḥadith
• “The Prophet sent Khālid” – this took place during the Tabūk campaign.
• “Ukaydir” – with hamza and ḍammah; the diminutive of Akdar. He was Ukaydir ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Kindī, ruler of Dūmat al-Jandal in the pre-Islamic era. He owned a fortress called Mārid, an impregnable stronghold whose remains still stand. The Prophet ﷺ sent Khālid ibn al-Walīd to him from Tabūk; Khālid captured him, took the fortress, and brought him to Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ then returned him to his land and levied the jizya upon him. After the Prophet’s death he broke the treaty, so Abū Bakr sent Khālid against him; Khālid killed him and seized Dūmat al-Jandal.
• “Dūmah” – with a ḍammah on the dāl followed by a quiescent wāw, then mīm and hāʾ (some read it with a fatḥah on the dāl). It is an ancient agricultural town in the al-Jawf region located on the borders of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
