- Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarāḥ (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declare, “Some of the Muslims may grant protection that is binding upon all the Muslims.” It was recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah and Aḥmad, and its chain of transmission is weak (1).
Al-Ṭayālisī transmits—on the authority of ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ—the wording: “The least of them may grant protection binding upon the Muslims” (2).
In the two Ṣaḥīḥs, ʿAlī relates: “The covenant of security granted by the Muslims is one; the humblest among them may confer it.”
Ibn Mājah, through another chain, adds: “and the most distant of them may likewise grant it” (3).
The two Ṣaḥīḥs also contain, in the report of Umm Hānīʾ, the Prophet’s words: “We have guaranteed the safety of anyone to whom you have granted safety” (4).
— Hadith grading:
The ḥadīth master has clarified the rank of these narrations: they convey the same purport as what is found in the authentic collections, and the report has corroborating supports.
— Vocabulary:
• yujīru ʿalā al-muslimīn: from ijārah (granting safe-conduct), meaning to secure, safeguard, and protect; even the least of the Muslims may do so on behalf of the rest.
