1114 – ‘Awf ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: “The Prophet ﷺ ruled that the salab (the personal spoils taken from the slain) go to the killer.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd, and its original wording is in Muslim. ⦗1⦘
Grade of the ḥadīth:
The report is ṣaḥīḥ. It is firmly established in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim within a longer narration whose chain is sound and reliable. The only narrator of concern is Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, yet in this instance he transmits from the Syrians, and his narrations from them are accepted and well-authenticated.
Key terms:
• salab (with the vowels fatḥa on both consonants): al-‘Aynī explains that it is whatever one combatant takes from the other—anything found on him or with him, such as weapons, clothing, a mount, and similar items.
