1111 – Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “This verse was revealed about us, the maʿshar al-Ansar (company of the Helpers)—namely His words: ‘And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction’ (Qur’an 2:195).” He made this statement in response to those who criticized a man who had charged single-handedly into the ranks of al-Rūm (the Byzantines) until he was deep among them. Reported by the three compilers, and declared authentic by al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Ḥibbān, and al-Ḥākim ⦗1⦘.
