82 – Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “None of you is to touch his private part with his right hand while he is urinating, nor wipe himself after relieving himself with his right hand, nor breathe into a vessel.” Agreed upon, and the wording is that of Muslim.⦗1⦘
Glossary of terms in the ḥadith
• lā yamsanna: the particle lā is prohibitive; the verb is configured with a fatḥah ending while functionally jussive because it is attached to the emphatic nūn. One says massastu al-shayʾa, meaning, “I placed my hand on something without a barrier.”
• walā yatamassah: from the form tafuʿʿul, which conveys deliberate effort; here it refers to performing istinjāʾ (removing filth) with one’s right hand, whether from the front or rear passage.
• al-khalāʾ: literally “open space”; here it means the place from which waste exits the body.
• walā yatanffas fī al-ināʾ: from the form tafuʿʿul; one says tanaffasa – yatanffasu – tanaffusan.
• tanaffus (breathing): drawing air into the lungs and expelling it. In this ḥadith it denotes breathing into a vessel while drinking. The verb yatanffasu is jussive.
• The three verbs are also narrated in the indicative, on the reading that lā serves for negation rather than prohibition.
