Hadith grading:
The hadith is sound.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Talkhīṣ: It was transmitted by al-Nasaʾī and Ibn Ḥibbān, and Abū Dāwūd related it from Muʿāwiyah as a marfūʿ report: “Hijrah will not cease until repentance ceases, and repentance will not cease until the sun rises from the west.”
Al-Haythamī commented, “The transmitters in Aḥmad’s chain are trustworthy.”
Al-Albānī wrote: It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd, al-Dārimī, al-Nasaʾī in al-Kubrá, al-Bayhaqī, and Aḥmad; considering all the routes together, he ruled it authentic.
Points derived from the hadith:
1 – The first hadith indicates that migration from the lands of the polytheists to the lands of the Muslims is obligatory. This is the position of the majority of scholars, based on the verse: “Indeed, those whom the angels take while wronging themselves, they will ask, ‘What condition were you in?’ They will reply, ‘We were oppressed in the land.’ The angels will say, ‘Was not the earth of Allah vast enough for you to emigrate therein?’ Such people will have Hell as their refuge—what an evil destination!” (al-Nisāʾ 4:97).
Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Saʿdī said: This verse proves that hijrah is among the greatest obligations, and that abandoning it is prohibited—indeed, one of the major sins.
2 – Sharḥ al-Iqnāʿ states: Hijrah is obligatory for everyone who is unable to manifest his religion
