Abu Thawr held that taʿzīr should match the magnitude of the transgression.

Malik maintained that taʿzīr must be commensurate with the crime.

Abu Yusuf stated that taʿzīr is determined by the seriousness of the sin and by what the judge deems the offender able to endure.

Shaykh Taqi al-Din added that taʿzīr may, in certain cases, take the form of execution, or it may be financial—whether through the destruction of property or its confiscation.
