– Professor Ṭabārah states that the effect of wine begins the moment ten grams of alcohol enter the bloodstream—an amount found in a single glass of whisky or cognac—and that quantity may not even reach the level of overt intoxication.
– One dose of wine causes a rise in blood pressure, and the increase doubles in a person who is already hypertensive.
– When the amount consumed is large, it provokes an agitation that further elevates the pressure until a cerebral artery bursts, resulting in paralysis.
– Alcohol also affects heredity: the children of habitual drinkers have been observed to grow up physically unhealthy, frail in build, deficient in intellect, with an inclination toward criminality and a drive toward wickedness.
– A Western author active in the fight against alcohol—Bitnam—in his book The Principles of Legislation writes: “Wine in the northern regions produces imbecility, and in the southern regions, madness.” He notes that his religion has forbidden every intoxicating beverage, and this is one of its virtues. He also says: Modern science has established that alcohol is of no benefit in medical treatment and that the idea of curing with it was mistaken; Islam anticipated this long ago, which testifies to the scientific marvel contained in the noble hadiths.
– Accordingly, the two hadiths are conclusive evidence that it is forbidden to seek treatment by drinking wine. Praise be to Allah—His wisdom in prohibiting it has become clear: it is a disease, not a cure.
