Vocabulary of the ḥadiths
• al-ʿinab: grapes – the fresh fruit of the vine; plural: aʿnâb.
• at-tamar: dates – the dried fruit of the date-palm; plurals: tamr, tamūr, tamrān when varieties are intended.
• al-ʿasal: honey – the pure substance secreted by bees; the word may be treated as masculine or feminine. It is also used for date syrup and sugar-cane juice; plurals: ʿasâl, ʿaslan, ʿasul.
• al-hinṭah: wheat; plural: ḥinṭ.
• ash-shaʿīr: barley – a cereal grass of the Poaceae family, nutritionally inferior to wheat.
• al-khamr mā khāmara al-ʿaql: wine is whatever intoxicates (literally, “covers”) the mind, i.e., whatever drink derived from grape juice produces intoxication.
• kullu muskir khamr: when kull (“every”) is annexed to an indefinite noun, it conveys totality; here it means that every single intoxicant is legally deemed wine and is therefore forbidden.
