This ḥadith is ḥasan li-ghayrih (sound owing to supporting chains). It was transmitted by al-Tirmidhī, al-Ḥākim and Ibn Mājah, and in its chain appears Ismāʿīl ibn Muslim al-Makkī, who is weak with respect to retention. It was also collected by Abū Dāwūd, al-Ḥākim, Ibn al-Sakan, al-Dāraquṭnī and al-Bayhaqī through the narration of Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām, and that isnād is unobjectionable. Additional routes exist, all of which reinforce one another, and the Rightly Guided Caliphs acted upon it.
