“Nor did they differentiate between what is prepared from grapes and what is prepared from other materials; rather, they treated them alike and declared unlawful every drink whose very kind intoxicates. They did not hesitate, ask for clarification, or experience any uncertainty. On the contrary, they hastened to destroy every intoxicant—even those not produced from grape juice. They were the masters of the language, and the Qur’an had been revealed in their tongue; had they felt the least doubt, they would have held back from pouring it away until they had inquired further and confirmed the prohibition.”
