80 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Beware of the two matters that bring about people’s curses: a person who relieves himself in the public pathway or in their shade.” Reported by Muslim. (1)
Abū Dāwūd adds, on the authority of Muʿādh (may Allah be pleased with him), the phrase “at the water sources,” and his wording is: “Beware of the three places that invite curses: relieving oneself at the water sources, in the middle of the road, or in the shade.” (2)
Aḥmad narrates from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) the wording: “or in stagnant water,” but both of these additional wordings are weak. (3)
Al-Ṭabarānī also recorded a prohibition against answering the call of nature beneath fruit-bearing trees or on the bank of a flowing river, in a report from Ibn ʿUmar with a weak chain of transmission. (4)
Status of the ḥadīth:
• The core narration is authentic.
• The author, however, cites three supplementary phrases: Aḥmad’s addition (“or in stagnant water”), Abū Dāwūd’s addition (“at the water sources”), and al-Ṭabarānī’s addition (“beneath fruit-bearing trees”). All three are weak.
– Aḥmad’s addition is weak because Ibn Laḥīʿah appears in its chain, and he had a poor memory.
– Abū Dāwūd’s addition is weak due to a break in the chain; it is narrated by Abū Saʿīd
