1076 – On the authority of Ṣafwān ibn Umayya (may Allah be pleased with him): “When the Prophet ﷺ ordered that the hand of the man who had stolen Ṣafwān’s cloak be severed and Ṣafwān interceded for him, the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Why did you not do that before you brought him to me?!’” Reported by Aḥmad and the Four, and declared sound by Ibn al-Jārūd and al-Ḥākim. Hadith grading:
The hadith is ṣaḥīḥ (sound).

Al-Albānī said: The report is supported by several chains:

1. Via Ḥumayd, the nephew of Ṣafwān, from Ṣafwān; recorded by Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, al-Ḥākim, and al-Bayhaqī.
2. Via ʿIkrima, from Ṣafwān; recorded by al-Nasāʾī. All its transmitters are trustworthy.
3. Via Ṭāwūs, from Ṣafwān ibn Umayya; recorded by al-Nasāʾī, al-Dāraquṭnī, and al-Ḥākim, who judged the chain sound—a verdict endorsed by al-Dhahabī. Every narrator in it is reliable and found in the two Ṣaḥīḥs.
4. Via Ṭāriq ibn Murtafiʿ, from Ṣafwān ibn Umayya; recorded by Aḥmad and al-Nasāʾī. Its transmitters are those of the two Ṣaḥīḥs except for Ṭāriq.
5. Via Ṣafwān ibn ʿAbd-Allāh ibn Ṣafwān; recorded by Aḥmad. Though mursal, this strong chain corroborates the preceding connected ones.

In conclusion, some of the routes possess an unquestionably sound chain, and taken together the hadith is certainly authentic.
