Vocabulary of the ḥadith:
– mijann: with a kasrah on the mīm and an open jīm (with a dot), ending in a doubled nūn. It means “shield.” Its plural is mijān, on the same pattern as dawāb. The term derives from ijtinān, “to conceal oneself,” because a shield protects a person from weapon strikes in battle.
– dirham: the standard dirham weight of silver is 2.975 grams.
