1067 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A thief’s hand is not to be cut off unless the value taken reaches a quarter of a dinar or more.” Agreed upon, and the wording is Muslim’s.
Al-Bukhārī’s wording: “A thief’s hand is cut off for a quarter of a dinar or more.”
In a narration recorded by Aḥmad: “Carry out the amputation for a quarter of a dinar, and do not amputate for anything less than that.” ⦗1⦘

Grade of the ḥadīth:
Although some scholars judged Aḥmad’s chain weak, it is strengthened by the preceding ḥadīth of ʿĀʾishah in the two Ṣaḥīḥs, for both narrations convey the same ruling.
Vocabulary:
– fa-saʿidan: an emphatic circumstantial accusative that follows fa or thumma (but not wa) and means “even if it exceeds that.”
– dīnār: a gold mithqāl weighing 4.25 grams of pure gold.
