1060 – Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allah be pleased with him, related: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the effeminate men and the masculine women, and he said, ‘Expel them from your houses.’” Al-Bukhārī narrated it (1).

Lexical notes
• al-mukhannathīn: plural of mukhannath. A mukhannath is a man whose manner has become soft and delicate, so that he imitates women in dress, movements, and speech.
• al-mutarajjilāt: women who imitate men. Another hadith recorded by Abū Dāwūd explains the term in this sense: they copy men’s distinctive traits in movement, speech, clothing, appearance, and other matters particular to men.

Points derived from the hadith

1. Effeminate men are those who emulate women in their gestures, gait, affected softness, clothing, and other characteristics specific to women. A repugnant segment of youth has adopted such feminine traits wholesale; they must be curbed lest their corruption spread among themselves and to others. This group of loose, over-refined, effeminate young men—labeled “the third sex”—have displayed deeds and conditions that make one’s forehead sweat in shame. Strict measures must therefore be taken against them, and their mischief must be eradicated.
