Points derived from the hadith
- The report indicates that Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with them, upheld the Prophet’s practice during their respective caliphates by executing the penalty for an unmarried fornicator: they each administered one hundred lashes, exactly as stated in the noble verse, “The woman and the man guilty of fornication—flog each of them one hundred lashes” (Q 24:2).
- The two Rightly Guided Caliphs also banished the unmarried fornicator from his hometown to another locality for a full year, as established by the Sunnah.
- This constitutes decisive proof that this prescribed punishment remains in force; it has neither been abrogated nor altered. These two great Imams, may Allah be pleased with them, implemented it in practice.
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Follow the two who will come after me: Abū Bakr and ʿUmar.” Ibn Mājah, al-Ḥākim, and al-Tirmidhī—who graded it hasan—narrated the tradition.
