Ibn al-Qayyim said: The followers of the four Imams hold that no retaliation (qiṣāṣ) is due for a mere slap or single blow, and some of them have even claimed consensus on the matter. Yet in doing so they have departed from plain analogy, the implications of the revealed texts, and the consensus of the Companions. Allah the Exalted says, “And if you retaliate, retaliate with the like of that with which you were harmed” (al-Naḥl 126).
Accordingly, the wronged party is entitled to treat the aggressor exactly as the aggressor treated him: a slap for a slap, a strike for a strike, at the same spot, with the same implement—or one equivalent—because that comes closer to the parity that the Law enjoins than disciplining the offender with a punishment that differs in kind or manner from his own aggression. This was the practice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his successors; it is dictated by sound analogy and affirmed in the explicit statements of Aḥmad.
