1017 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that al-Rubayyiʿ bint al-Naḍr—his paternal aunt—broke the incisor of a young girl. The girl’s guardians asked her to pardon the offender, but they refused. They then offered the monetary compensation (arsh), yet they still refused. So they took the case to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, demanding nothing but exact retaliation. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ therefore ordered that retaliation be carried out. Anas ibn al-Naḍr said, “O Messenger of Allah, will al-Rubayyiʿ’s incisor really be broken? By the One Who sent you with the truth, her tooth will not be broken!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “O Anas, the Book of Allah prescribes retaliation.” The people were then satisfied and chose to pardon, whereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Among Allah’s servants are those who, were they to swear by Allah, He would surely fulfil their oath.” Agreed upon; the wording is that of al-Bukhari.⦗1⦘
Glossary of hadith terms:
– al-Rubayyiʿ: the diminutive of Rabīʿ, pronounced with ḍamma on the rāʾ, fatḥa on the bā, a doubled yāʾ, ending with a voiced ʿayn. She was an Anṣārī woman from the Khazraj tribe, sister of Anas ibn al-Naḍr and paternal aunt of Anas ibn Mālik, the Prophet’s attendant.
– Incisor (thaniyya): one of the four front teeth—two upper and two lower.
– Young girl (jāriya): here, a free young woman of the Anṣār; the term does not refer to a slave girl, for retaliation is not carried out between a free person and a slave.
– Arsh: the monetary compensation representing the difference between the victim’s value when sound and his or her value after the injury; the victim is assessed as though he or she were an unblemished slave,
