1015 – ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), reported that a man stabbed another man in the knee with a qarn (horn). The victim came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Exact retaliation for me (aqidnī).” The Prophet replied, “Wait until you have recovered.” The man later returned and said, “Exact retaliation for me,” so the Prophet allowed retaliation to be taken. After it was done, the man came back yet again and said, “Messenger of Allah, I have become lame!” The Prophet answered, “I told you to wait, but you disobeyed me. May Allah distance you, and your lameness is void.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then forbade taking retaliation for an injury until its victim has healed. Reported by Aḥmad and al-Dāraquṭnī, though it was challenged for being mursal. ⦗1⦘
Degree of authenticity:
The ḥadith is sound. Aḥmad narrates it through Ibn Isḥāq, and al-Dāraquṭnī through Ibn Jurayj, both from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb. All the transmitters are trustworthy, but Ibn Isḥāq and Ibn Jurayj practiced tadlīs and did not state “I heard.” Nevertheless, the report has supporting chains that strengthen it. Ibn al-Turkmanī said, “This ruling has been transmitted through several routes, each reinforcing the other.” I say: therefore it is ṣaḥīḥ due to corroboration.
