985 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Suckling is only taken into account during the first two years.” Reported by al-Dāraqutnī and Ibn ʿAdiyy, both with isnāds traced back to the Prophet and as a Companion statement, and both preferred the Companion version.⦗1⦘

Hadith grading:
The report is mawqūf (a Companion statement).
Al-Hāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar says in al-Talkhīṣ: “Al-Dāraqutnī transmitted it through ʿAmr b. Dīnār, from Ibn ʿAbbās, and remarked, ‘Ibn Jamīl alone related it from Ibn ʿUyaynah, and he was reliable and meticulous.’ Ibn ʿAdiyy commented that Ibn Jamīl sometimes erred, while al-Bayhaqī stated, ‘The sound version is mawqūf.’”
The author likewise notes: “Al-Dāraqutnī and Ibn ʿAdiyy recorded it both as marfūʿ (traced back to the Prophet) and as mawqūf, yet both favored the mawqūf wording.” The mawqūf verdict was also upheld by al-Bayhaqī, ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq, Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī, and al-Zaylaʿī, and this is the correct view.
Ibn al-Qayyim, however, declared the marfūʿ version authentic in his work al-Hādī.
