Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah held a fourth opinion: that nursing an adult is a general concession for anyone whose circumstances resemble those of Sahlah. He regarded this view as a middle way that harmonizes the proofs, since abrogation cannot be established here—chronology is unknown.
Nor has any sound evidence shown that the ruling was confined to Salim alone. Rather, it applies to anyone in a comparable situation—such as Salim and the wife of Abu Hudhayfah—where strict seclusion from him would impose undue hardship and his regular entry and private association cannot be dispensed with.
Ibn al-Qayyim preferred this approach in al-Hady, stating: “This is more fitting than abrogation or the claim that the license was restricted to one specific person. It is nearer to acting on all the hadiths from both sides, and the principles of the Law testify to it. Allah is the One who grants success.”
