68 – ʿĀ’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said: “Whoever is overtaken by vomiting, a nosebleed, qalas, or the emission of madhy should leave, perform ablution, and then resume his prayer, without uttering a word while doing so.” Reported by Ibn Mājah, and judged weak by Aḥmad and others.⦗1⦘
Degree of authenticity:
The ḥadith is weak; the correct ruling is that it is mursal. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar states in al-Talkhīṣ that several scholars declared it defective because it is transmitted by Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh from Ibn Jurayj, and Ismāʿīl’s narrations from the Ḥijāzis are weak. Reliable students of Ibn Jurayj disagreed with him and reported it from Ibn Jurayj, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ as a mursal report. This mursal chain was considered sound by Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Dhuhalī, al-Dāraquṭnī in al-ʿIlal, and Abū Ḥātim, who said, “The report of Ismāʿīl is a mistake.” Ibn Maʿīn said, “A weak ḥadith.” Ibn ʿAdī observed that Ismāʿīl narrated it once in this form and once as “from Ibn Jurayj, from his father, from ʿĀ’ishah,” and that both versions are weak. Aḥmad concluded, “What is correct is the report from Ibn Jurayj, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ, mursal.”
