949 – Salamah ibn Ṣakhr (d. – ) related: “When Ramadan began I feared that I might have intercourse with my wife, so I pronounced ẓihār against her. One night part of her became uncovered to me and I lay with her. Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said to me, ‘Free a slave.’ I replied, ‘I own nothing but my own neck.’ He said, ‘Then fast two consecutive months.’ I said, ‘It was fasting that made me fall into what I did!’ He said, ‘Then feed sixty needy people one farq of dates.’” Narrated by Aḥmad and the Four except al-Nasāʾī, and declared sound by Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn al-Jārūd ⦗1⦘.
Hadith grading:
This ḥadith is ṣaḥīḥ through corroborating routes. It was transmitted by Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah, al-Ḥākim, Aḥmad, Ibn Khuzaymah, and Ibn al-Jārūd via several chains from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAṭāʾ, from Sulaymān ibn Yasār, from Salamah ibn Ṣakhr al-Bayāḍī.
Al-Ḥākim said, “A ṣaḥīḥ report according to the criteria of Muslim,” and al-Dhahabī concurred, though the reliability is somewhat clouded by Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq’s use of ʿanʿanah.
Al-Tirmidhī remarked, “This is a ḥasan ḥadith,” while al-Bukhārī observed, “Sulaymān did not hear directly from Salamah ibn Ṣakhr, yet the report is sound through its various chains and supporting narrations.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar also graded its chain ḥasan in Fatḥ al-Bārī (9/433).
