936 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah, Exalted is He, has lifted from my community liability for what is done by mistake, out of forgetfulness, or under coercion.” It was recorded by Ibn Mājah and al-Ḥākim, while Abū Ḥātim said, “It is not firmly established.”⦗1⦘
Grade of the ḥadith
The ḥadith is judged hasan. Scholars have differed over it and over its corroborating reports, yet the stronger view is to accept it.
Ibn Ḥajar said, “Its narrators are trustworthy, although it has been critiqued with a defect that is not damaging.”
Ibn Rajab, in his commentary on the Forty Ḥadith, wrote: “Ibn Mājah transmitted this report through the chain of al-Awzāʿī—from ʿAṭāʾ—from Ibn ʿAbbās—from the Prophet ﷺ. Ibn Ḥibbān included it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (16/202), and so did al-Dāraquṭnī (4/170); both of them give the chain as al-Awzāʿī—from ʿAṭāʾ—from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr—from Ibn ʿAbbās—from the Prophet ﷺ. On the surface this isnād is sound, and every one of its transmitters is relied upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Al-Ḥākim also recorded it, declaring it authentic according to their criteria, and al-Dhahabī concurred.”
Yet the report has a flaw. Imām Aḥmad rejected it strongly, saying, “It is narrated only from al-Ḥasan, from the Prophet ﷺ.” Abū Ḥātim remarked, “These are repudiated ḥadiths, almost as though they were fabricated, for al-Awzāʿī never heard this ḥadith from ʿAṭāʾ, although it has reached us from the Prophet ﷺ through other routes.”
Abū Dāwūd said, “Al-Walīd ibn Muslim related ten ḥadiths from Mālik that have no basis; four of them he attributes to Nāfiʿ.”
