Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

935 – On the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): the Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah, Exalted is He, has pardoned my community for whatever thoughts they entertain within themselves, so long as they neither act upon them nor voice them.” Agreed upon. ⦗1⦘

Vocabulary of the ḥadīth
– tajāwaza: from jāza – yajūzu; the alif in the verb stems from an original wāw. To “overlook” the wrongdoer means to pardon him, turn away from him, and not call him to account for his sin.
– ḥaddathat: with a doubled (geminated) dāl. One says ḥaddathahu bi-kadhā, meaning “he informed him of such-and-such.” Here it refers to inner discourse—that is, the passing notions that cross the heart as whisperings.
