930 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, during the caliphate of Abū Bakr, and for the first two years of ʿUmar’s rule, a triple divorce counted as one. But ʿUmar declared, ‘People have begun to rush in a matter over which they used to show deliberation. What if we were to enforce it upon them?’ So he enforced it upon them.” Muslim narrated it. (1)
Vocabulary:
• ʾanāh (deliberation, respite): Al-Miṣbāḥ states that al-ānāʾ is the plural of “times.” Its singular appears in two forms: ʾiny (patterned like ḥiml, with a short vowel) and ʾanāh (patterned like ḥaṣāh). The term denotes patience and forbearance.
• amḍaynāh (we enforced it): The verb ʾamḍā al-amr imḍāʾan means “to carry out or execute a matter”—that is, “if we were to apply and enforce against them the triple divorce they uttered in haste, it would deter them from repeating successive pronouncements.”
