924 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: “During the illness from which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, he would ask, ‘Where shall I be tomorrow?’—meaning the turn of ʿĀʾishah. His wives therefore allowed him to stay wherever he wished, and so he remained in ʿĀʾishah’s house.” Agreed upon. (1)
Vocabulary
• ghadan (tomorrow): with an open ghayn and dāl. Al-Miṣbāḥ explains that ghad is the day immediately following the one you are in.
• “Where shall I be tomorrow?” – This was a subtle indication to his wives to grant him permission to stay with ʿĀʾishah; they understood the hint and consented.
Points Derived from the Ḥadīth
- The narration affirms the obligation of equity when apportioning nights among one’s wives and forbids giving preference to any of them in lodging or similar matters.
- This division remains obligatory even when the husband is ill, for its purpose is overnight companionship and good company, not marital intimacy itself.
- Natural inclination and heartfelt love for one wife do not conflict with equitable division, because such feelings are beyond human control and are in Allah’s hands alone. For this reason the Prophet ﷺ used to divide fairly and would say: “O Allah, this is my division regarding what I can control, so do not blame me for what You control and I do not.”
- If a wife—or all the wives—voluntarily permits the husband to spend the night wherever he wishes among them, it is permissible, since the right belongs to them and they have willingly waived it.

* مفردات الحديث:
