914 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never disparaged any food at all. If he desired it he would eat it, and if he disliked it he would simply leave it.” Agreed upon. (1)
• Vocabulary of the hadith:
– ʿāba: yaʿību ʿayban; ʿayb means a flaw or deficiency, plural ʿuyūb. Here it denotes that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never attributed any defect to food.
– qaṭṭu: with qāf fatḥah and a geminated ṭāʾ with ḍamma (pronounced “qaṭṭu”).
Al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ defines qaṭṭu as an adverb of time signifying absolute negation of the past; it is used only in negative constructions, as in, “I have never done this qaṭṭu.” Al-Muḥīṭ adds: “The common folk say, ‘I will never do it qaṭṭu,’ and this is incorrect.”
I say: this is because qaṭṭu is restricted to past time.
