912 – From ʿUmar ibn Abī Salama (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Young boy! Mention Allah’s name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is directly in front of you.” Agreed upon (1).
Vocabulary of the ḥadīth:
• “young boy” (ghulām): a male from birth until the age of puberty. The broken plural of paucity is ghilma, while the abundant plural is ghilmān. The word is also used figuratively for a servant or hired worker.
• “Mention Allah’s name” (sammillāh): the imperative of sammā. One says sammā in an action when he utters the name of Allah over it, by saying: “In the name of Allah.”
• “from what is directly in front of you” (mimmā yalīk): the verb waliya, yalī means to come near. Here it means that one should eat from the part of the dish that is nearest to him.
