911 – From Abū Juḥayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): he said, The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I do not eat while reclining.” – Reported by al-Bukhārī (1).
Vocabulary of the ḥadīth:
• “while reclining” (muttaʾikan): al-Muḥīṭ and others explain that ittakaʾa, ittikāʾan means to sit firmly settled, cross-legged. Ibn al-Athīr adds that ordinary people are only familiar with ittikāʾ as leaning to one side while seated, and the term is used for both senses.
