907 – Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The food of the walīmah (wedding banquet) on the first day is a right; the food on the second day is a sunnah; and the food on the third day is ostentation. Whoever seeks people’s attention, Allah will expose him.” Related by al-Tirmidhī, who deemed it odd, and its transmitters are those of the Ṣaḥīḥ (1). It also has a corroborating narration from Anas recorded by Ibn Mājah (2).
Hadith grading:
This ḥadith is weak.
Al-Tirmidhī transmitted it and regarded it as strange. Among its supporting narrations is what Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, al-Ṭaḥāwī, and al-Bayhaqī recorded from a man of Thaqīf; al-Bukhārī said its isnād is not sound. Al-Munāwī declared the ḥadith weak in Fayḍ al-Qadīr, refuting al-Suyūṭī’s authentication.
Al-Tirmidhī stated: “This ḥadith is not known as marfūʿ except through the narration of Ziyād ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who reports many singular and objectionable narrations.” Al-Bayhaqī and al-Dāraqutnī also judged him weak.
As for the narration of Anas, al-Ḥāfiẓ said: it contains Bakr ibn Khunays, and he is weak.
The ḥadith has other routes and supporting reports, but Shaykh al-Albānī concluded: “In sum, most of its chains and corroborations are extremely weak; not one of them is free from a narrator who is either suspect or abandoned. Therefore, the ḥadith remains weak.”
