906 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When any one of you is invited, let him respond. If he is fasting, let him pray; and if he is not fasting, let him eat.” Reported by Muslim as well (1).
Muslim also transmits a similar wording from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): “If he wishes, he may eat, and if he wishes, he may abstain.” (2)
Vocabulary of the ḥadith
– fal-yujib: meaning, “let him go to the place of the invitation.”
– fal-yuṣalli: the root of ṣalāh is originally a wāw; linguistically it denotes “supplication,” and here the meaning is: “let him supplicate.”
