Decision of the Council of Senior Scholars on Eliminating Extravagance:

The Council of Senior Scholars issued Decision (52) dated 4/4/1397 AH, which states: The Council is of the view that one of the most successful ways to eradicate extravagance and waste is for the leaders of society—princes, scholars, and other dignitaries and notable figures—to take the lead themselves. For the masses will not refrain as long as they see their superiors and community notables persisting in such conduct. Therefore, those in authority must begin with themselves and instruct their closest associates to do likewise before directing others, following the example of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions—may Allah be pleased with them.
