900 – ʿAlī – may Allah be pleased with him – said: “The bridal dower must not be less than ten dirhams.” Al-Dāraqutnī recorded it as a Companion-statement, and its chain of transmission is open to criticism. ⦗1⦘
Hadith grading:
The report is weak, though a few scholars considered it acceptable. The author notes that Al-Dāraqutnī narrated it mawqūf from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib – may Allah be pleased with him – yet the isnād of this mawqūf version is problematic, for it contains Mubashshir ibn ʿUbayd; Aḥmad said of him, “He fabricated hadith.” A narration of this sort cannot stand against sound reports. The statement has also been transmitted marfūʿ from Jābir, but that chain is likewise unsound.
Al-Kamāl ibn al-Humām states in Fatḥ al-Qadīr: “The narration carries evidentiary weight when taken together with its corroborating versions and supporting reports,” after which he quotes his teacher, the ḥadith master Ibn Ḥajar, who produced another chain that he rated as ḥasan.
