898 – ʿAbd Allah, the son of ʿAmir ibn Rabiʿah, narrates from his father that “the Prophet ﷺ approved the marriage of a woman for the dowry of two sandals.” Al-Tirmidhi recorded the report and judged it authentic, although others disagreed. (1)

• Hadith grading:
  The report is weak.
  Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar states in Bulugh al-Maram, after citing al-Tirmidhi’s authentication, that other authorities dissented.
  Al-Fath al-Rabbani notes that the hadith was transmitted by al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and al-Bayhaqi.
  Al-Tirmidhi himself said, “The hadith of ʿAmir ibn Rabiʿah is sound and authentic.”
  Among those who disputed its soundness was al-Bukhari. Ibn Maʿin remarked, “Its chain contains ʿAsim ibn ʿUbayd Allah, a weak narrator.” Ibn Hibban said, “He makes gross errors, so his reports were abandoned.” Ibn al-Turkumani quotes Abu Hatim al-Razi as saying that the hadith is munkar (denounced).
