896 – ʿAlqama narrates from Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him):
He was asked about a man who married a woman without stipulating a ṣadaq (dowry) for her and died before consummation. Ibn Masʿūd replied, “She is entitled to a dowry equal to that of women of her standing—neither less nor excessive. She must observe the ʿidda (waiting period), and she is entitled to the inheritance.”
Thereupon Maʿqil b. Sinān al-Ashjaʿī stood up and said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ issued the same ruling concerning Barwaʿ bint Wāshiq, a woman from our tribe.” Ibn Masʿūd rejoiced at hearing this. Reported by Aḥmad and the Four, and declared authentic by al-Tirmidhī and several others. (1)
Status of the ḥadīth:
The report is ṣaḥīḥ (sound). It is recorded by Aḥmad, the compilers of the Sunan, Ibn Ḥibbān, and al-Ḥākim. It was authenticated by Ibn Mahdī, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Bayhaqī. Although the Companion’s name differs in some chains, this does not affect its reliability, for all the narrators are upright. Al-Ḥākim said, “Sound according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim,” and al-Dhahabī agreed. Ibn Ḥazm stated, “There is no flaw in it, for its chain is sound.”
A corroborating chain is found in Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, and al-Bayhaqī, from the narration of ʿUqba b. ʿĀmir.
