895 – ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Any woman who is married for a dowry (ṣadāq), an extra gift (ḥibāʾ), or a promised item (ʿidda) that is given before the bond of marriage (ʿiṣmat al-nikāḥ) is concluded—then it is hers. Whatever is given after the marriage bond belongs to the one to whom it is presented. And the noblest thing over which a man should show generosity is his own daughter or his sister.” Reported by Aḥmad and the Four except al-Tirmidhī.⦗1⦘

Its transmitters are trustworthy. Al-Shawkānī writes in Nayl al-Awṭār that Abū Dāwūd remained silent about it, and al-Mundhirī noted that it is through the chain of ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, about whom there is a well-known discussion. Everyone below ʿAmr in the chain is reliable, but many hadith masters state that when ʿAmr narrates from his father from his grandfather, as in this report, he is reading from a written document rather than relaying what he heard directly.
Glossary of terms
• “Ayyumā” – an indefinite relative pronoun with a conditional meaning. It is fully declinable because it is habitually annexed to a singular noun, as in “any woman.” When the annexed noun is omitted, it takes tanwīn in compensation, as in Qurʾān 17:110. The particle “mā” may be added for emphasis, as here. The verb of the condition is “nakahat” (she marries) and its apodosis is “fahuwa liman uʿṭiyah” (it belongs to the one it was given to).
• ḥibāʾ – a supplementary gift the bride receives in addition to her mahr.
• ʿidda – here, a promised item the husband undertakes to give his wife even if he has not yet produced it.
