886 – It is narrated from Abū Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ said: “When a man calls his wife to his bed and she refuses to come, so he spends the night angry with her, the angels curse her until morning.” Agreed upon, and this wording is al-Bukhārī’s.
Muslim has the variant: “The One who is in heaven is displeased with her until he [the husband] is pleased with her.” (1)
— Vocabulary of the ḥadith —
• “He called (daʿā) his wife” – that is, he requested her.
• “To his bed” – with a kasrah on the fāʾ; here it is a euphemism for intercourse.
— Points derived from the ḥadith —
1 – The narration highlights the great right a husband has over his wife, as Allah says: “Men are caretakers of women by virtue of what Allah has given one over the other and by what they spend from their wealth.” [al-Nisāʾ 4:34]
2 – She is obliged to listen to him and obey him in what is reasonable. In the Musnad and the Sunan of Ibn Mājah it is reported from Muʿādh b. Jabal that the Prophet ﷺ said: “By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad! A woman does not fulfill the right of her Lord until she fulfills the right of her husband; even if he asks her for herself while she is on a saddle, she must not refuse.”
3 – It is unlawful for a wife to refuse, procrastinate, or display aversion when her husband summons her to his bed for intercourse. Such refusal is counted among the major sins, for it brings about the angels’ curse upon her until dawn.
