883 – Ḥakīm ibn Muʿāwiyah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him): “I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, what is the right of a wife over her husband?’ He replied: ‘Feed her whenever you eat, clothe her whenever you clothe yourself, do not strike the face, do not revile her, and do not abandon her except within the house.’” Reported by Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Mājah; al-Bukhārī cited part of it in suspension, and Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Ḥākim authenticated it. ⦗1⦘
Hadith grading:
This narration is sound (ṣaḥīḥ).
It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, Ibn Mājah, al-Ḥākim, and Ibn Ḥibbān, who both declared it authentic. Al-Bukhārī cited a portion of it in muʿallaq form, and al-Dāraquṭnī also deemed it sound. Abū Dāwūd brought it in his Sunan through three chains, each of them from Bahz ibn Ḥakīm from his father from his grandfather. The scholars have differed over the reliability of this particular transmission: some accepted it as evidence, while others did not. Al-Tirmidhī likewise transmitted part of it and judged it sound.
Vocabulary:
– “mā ḥaqq”: the particle mā has several functions; here it is an interrogative pronoun standing in the position of the subject, while ḥaqq (“right”) is its predicate.
– “lā tuqabbih”: with a ḍammah on the tāʾ, a fatḥah on the qāf, a shaddah on the bāʾ, and ending with a hāʾ. Its sense is: “do not say, ‘May Allah disfigure you!’,” i.e., do not use words of revilement.
