They are matters of the utmost privacy between the spouses, and both of them detest the thought that anyone else might come to know of them.
– For this reason the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described the spouse who betrays this trust by informing people of what happened between him and his wife in that situation, or of some defect he noticed in her, as the worst of people in Allah’s sight and the lowest in rank.
– The ḥadith therefore establishes that it is forbidden to disclose the intimate secrets that come to light when the spouses are alone together, for the one who publicizes such a secret is, before Allah, the most wicked of people.
– Islam views the sexual relationship between husband and wife as something honoured and worthy of respect. It must be safeguarded, and neither partner may neglect that duty by being entrusted with confidentiality only to betray it.
– Moreover, the playful acts exchanged between the spouses during intercourse are completely unrestricted in that context, for they increase mutual desire and stimulate both partners; for this reason even what would otherwise be deemed lying is permitted there. However, if either of them becomes aware that these secrets will be revealed, paraded before others, and made the object of mockery and criticism, he or she will hold back and suppress them. The sexual meeting will then grow lukewarm and lifeless, and this may ultimately lead to the breakdown of the marriage or the cessation of marital relations altogether.
– The scholars have said that merely mentioning intercourse is disliked when there is no need, but it is permissible when a need exists—such as mentioning it because the wife is refusing intimacy, or because she claims that he is incapable of intercourse, and so forth.
