60 – It is narrated from Ubayy ibn ʿImārah, may Allah be pleased with him: he said, “O Messenger of Allah, may I wipe over the leather socks?” He answered, “Yes.” He asked, “For one day?” He replied, “Yes.” He asked, “And two days?” He replied, “Yes.” He asked, “And three days?” He replied, “Yes, and for as long thereafter as you wish.” It was recorded by Abu Dāwūd, who remarked, “It is not strong.” (1)
Status of the hadith:
The report is weak. In his Takhṣīṣ, the author notes that al-Bukhārī declared it infirm, saying, “It is not sound.” Abu Dāwūd said, “Its chain is disputed and it is not strong.” Aḥmad said, “Its transmitters are unknown.” Abū ’l-Fatḥ al-Azdī said, “This hadith is not upheld.” Ibn Ḥibbān said, “I do not rely on the isnād of this report.” Al-Dāraquṭnī said, “It is not established.” Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said, “It is not established and it has no reliable chain.” Al-Nawawī relates in al-Majmūʿ Sharḥ al-Muhadhdhab the consensus of the imams that it is weak.
Vocabulary notes:
– ʾamsaḥu (“Shall I wipe?”): The initial hamzah is the basic interrogative particle; here it has been omitted for ease of pronunciation, the second hamzah sufficing to convey the question.
– naʿam (“Yes”): A reply particle pronounced with two fathahs; it stands in place of the full affirmative sentence that is omitted. In this report, each occurrence means: “Yes, wipe over the leather socks.” This is one of its three primary usages.
Points derived from the hadith:
1 – The report indicates that wiping over the leather socks is not restricted to a set time-limit, and that the person performing wuḍūʾ may wipe
