876 – Zayd ibn Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah reports from his father (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married al-ʿĀliyah from the tribe of Ghifār. When she entered upon him and had set aside her garments, he noticed a white patch on her flank. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Put your clothes back on and return to your family,’ and he instructed that she be given her bridal gift.” Al-Ḥākim narrated this report, but its chain contains Jamīl ibn Zayd, who is unknown, and there is considerable disagreement about his shaykh.(1)
Hadith grading:
This narration is weak. Imām Aḥmad recorded it with his chain to Kaʿb ibn Zayd (or Zayd ibn Kaʿb) and mentioned the same incident. Al-Albānī concludes: “In sum, the hadith is very weak because it contains Jamīl ibn Zayd, who is its sole transmitter.” The scholars have sharply criticized Jamīl ibn Zayd: al-Bukhārī said, “His hadith is not authentic”; Ibn ʿAdī said, “He is not trustworthy”; al-Nasāʾī said, “He is not strong”; and al-Baghawī said, “His reports are weak.” Because of the inconsistencies in his narrations, Ibn Ḥajar remarked, “Jamīl ibn Zayd’s reports are highly confused.”
The incident, however, is authentically established in another wording found in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: “When the daughter of al-Jawn entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and he approached her, she said, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from you.’ He replied, ‘You have sought refuge with the Most Great; return to your family.’”
