875 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “A woman embraced Islam and later married another man. Her former husband then came and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I had already accepted Islam, and she was aware of my Islam.’ Thereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took her away from her second husband and returned her to her first.” It was narrated by Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, and Ibn Mājah, and was declared authentic by Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Ḥākim.⦗1⦘
Hadith grading
This ḥadīth is weak.
Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Ḥibbān transmitted it through Simāk— from ʿIkrimah— from Ibn ʿAbbās. Al-Tirmidhī remarked, “A sound ḥadīth.” Three transmitters narrated it from Simāk ibn Ḥarb:
1 – ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā; Ibn al-Jārūd and al-Bayhaqī recorded it via al-Ḥākim, who graded it authentic, and al-Dhahabī agreed with him.
2 – Sulaymān ibn Muʿādh al-Anbarī, from Simāk, with wording identical to that of Wakīʿ; it appears in al-Ṭayālisī’s Musnad and, through him, in al-Bayhaqī’s work.
3 – ʿAbd al-Razzāq in his Muṣannaf.
Its chain is weak because the report hinges on the link “Simāk from ʿIkrimah.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “He is truthful, but his narrations from ʿIkrimah in particular are inconsistent.”
